Editing blog

Today in my AICE media studies class we edited our footage from Thursday. It was a struggle to edit because the school’s computers weren’t working so we weren’t able to get much done. In the beginning of class we went out to finish filming for the commercial. We only filmed different parts of the school because we didn’t think that all of our footage combined would be in the time limit that we needed. Today we filmed clips at the track to show our multi purpose field for soccer, track, and football. We also filmed the sign at our baseball field to show our Flying L spirit. Reese filmed Amanda and I cheering on our players at the bleachers by the track. Then I filmed Reese and Amanda cheering on our L’s by the baseball field.
During the editing process pinnacle studios was giving us trouble. We couldn’t open it for a while and then when it finally opened, it was being really slow inserting our footage onto the software. Once we the clips finally transferred Reese and I tried to start to edit. Reese knows more about the software and computer so she did most of the transferring and dumping. Although at first it took us a little bit to figure out how to transfer because we have never done it before. After a few minutes Reese found a way to transfer all the footage in the easiest way. Once we had got the footage into pinnacle studios we couldn’t edit it because it was being super slow and wouldn’t let us do some things we needed. We found out that no ones computers were working.
We had to upload some of our footage to google drive too, because it wouldn’t transfer the footage from today. Because of the issues at school we will have to edit next class. This could throw off our schedule because it will take us a while to edit and we only have 2 classes now instead of three to edit our footage. Today all we did in class was dump our footage and try to edit. We also had a limited amount of time because other classmates had to use our computer. We had only half of the class to use our computer because the other group was asking to use it. All of these problems made my group and I really angry for many reasons, like we were frustrated with the computer, we now won’t have enough time to edit because we missed out on a class of editing, and because we didn’t have enough time to do everything we wanted for our editing process because the other group had to use our computer. Today overall was a very stressful and unsuccessful day.

Filming blog

Today in my AICE media studies class we filmed our commercial. During this process we had to go to many locations around the school because we are promoting it. We filmed at the main student social area which is the bus loop, outside the cafeteria, in front of mural at the front of the school, and  a small circle by one of the main buildings. We brought many props for our scenes such as blue face paint and blue confetti to show our school spirit. We also brought many variations of school shirts for people that we asked to be in our commercial and so that we could change into them throughout the filming process. We asked about 10 people that we saw around the school to be in our commercial for different reasons such as the school spirit scene and to make our mascot, the flying L at the end of the film.
Before filming we had not assigned specific roles for our group members. As we were filming whoever fit the scene best or could record the certain way we wanted would do that job. For the first scene I recorded the close up of my group mate, Reese putting on blue face paint. I also participated in part of the school spirit scene by blowing confetti into the camera. For the last clip of the school spirit scene all my group mates joined in and we had a fellow student film us, and two other students. The next scene that was outside of the cafeteria Reese, Amanda, and I were all in the clip. I had set up the tripod so that we had good lighting compared to when Reese set the tripod up and the footage looked dark. They were ready at the table and I pressed record and ran over to the table. Since we didn’t have anyone to press record we are just going to edit me running to the table out of that take.
The third scene was filmed in front of the mural. This scene took a while to get good footage because it was a low angle tracking shot and we didn’t have anything to use that was on wheels. All 3 of my group members got to record and take part in the scene. When I recorded it was hard to walk and film because I had to hold the camera low and move the same pace as them without it being choppy or shaky. I was standing on grass so the land was uneven which made it even harder. Since we haven’t looked at the clips yet, we aren’t sure which one we are going to use for that scene. For the last scene I thought of a creative idea to form our mascot of an L in a circular area by the stairs. We got classmates that had finished filming their project to be apart of the L. I was in the formation of the L so Reese has directed us where to stand because she was at the top of the stairs filming. We were also going to film a scene of my group and I on the golf cart with security guard saying to come to our school. We hadn’t put this on the storyboard so it was more of a last minute add on, but we didn’t end up having enough time. At the end of the period Reese and I dumped all of our footage onto our computer and put all our equipment away.

Storyboard blog

Angles that we used are high angles and a low angle. For movements we used tracking and pan. We used many shots for our scenes including an establishing shot, stock shot, close up shot, and a long shot. We haven’t officially decided on transitions but we have thought of some, like a closing circle (iris out) and jump cut. We thought that these different shots, angles, and movements help us reach our goal of persuading kids to attend Fort Lauderdale High School. We used the storyboard because it helped us become organized and plan out our ideas for the project.

Editing lesson blog

Today in class we learned about the procedures of checking out cameras and equipment in class, as well as the procedure of how to transfer footage and edit it. We were taught how to use the program pinnacle studios which is the software we will be using for the majority of the year. While editing our footage we learned that we have to layer it. For example, text has to go on the first track because you want it to be seen, the footage goes on the second track, and the music goes on the third because it will be “under” the footage. I never realized that this is why you put it in that order and thought it was very interesting.
The camera procedure in our class is quite simple although there may be many steps. We must sign an agreement firstly, to insure we are responsible for the camera when we take it out. Then we will go collect our camera equipment in the back. We were taught the logistics of how to use the camera and tripod in class today too. This will help us work efficiently when our filming day comes. We also learned how to use the SD card reader which was new to me. Today was a successful day because we learned a lot in the amount of time that we were given and it was very important in the aspect of working on our recent project of a commercial.
The process of importing footage was very complex because there were a lot of steps. First you have to put the SD card in the SD card reader correctly. Then you go on the computer and open pinnacle studios. Next, you insert the SD card reader into the USB port on the computer and click on it. You can then save your footage from pinnacle studios onto a personal desktop folder. Because this was a new system it was very helpful to learn instead of our teacher leaving us to do it independently. Overall, today we learned the personal sign out procedure for our class's camera equipment, how to import footage from the cameras, and how to edit and save/export our footage.

Planning Blog

Today my group mates and I planned an outline for our commercial. We planned our weeks of working on the commercial to organize and to be more efficient. This will guide us into not making any mistakes. We also made a backup plan if something unexpected happens such as rain, our group mate is absent, or we aren’t allowed to film in the area we chose. Planning this is important because we will still be able to film even if our original plan becomes foiled. We also scheduled when to bring and what to bring as our costumes so we are able to film the day we need. Planning this will prevent us from falling behind and not having the ability to film on our designated day. We decided it would be best to start with a stock shot giving an overview of our school campus.
•Props: ID’s, backpacks, food. These emphasize that we are on school campus.
•Costumes: FLHS merchandise, blue black or white clothes, blue and white face paint, and blue accessories. This will show the emphasis of our school spirit.
•Schedule: 10/10-planning, 10/14- storyboarding, 10/22- filming, 10/24- editing. Planning out the weeks will help our group to be better organized.
•Locations: FLHS, building 5 stair case, senior patio, bus loop. We will know exactly where we need to go to help speed along the process of filming.
•Back up plan: If rain becomes a problem, instead of filming in the senior patio we will instead film at the picnic tables underneath an overhang outside of the cafeteria. We will extend the scene at the stair case instead of the bus loop. Additionally if someone is absent we will borrow a student from the class to replace the absent student.

Research conventions and codes

Today in my Aice Media Studies class, we picked our groups and researched facts for our commercial project. My group members are Reese and Amanda. I think that we will be a good team because we all share the trait of creativity. I think that portraying creativity in our group will help our assignment in the long run. However, I do think that it may cause some bumps along the road because we may disagree on some things due to our passions on creativity. When deciding which topic to do our commercial on we chose a few topics. As a result, we had narrowed it down to two topics of anti-vaping or an FLHS commercial. We decided on doing a commercial for the school, advertising to persuade 8th graders to attend Fort Lauderdale High School, for the next school year.
In a commercial there are many aspects relating to conventions and codes. They can be described as techniques, props, and characters that are used to enhance a scene. In our particular theme we focus on an academic and friendly environment at the school. We will provide information on what makes our school unique from its many clubs and activities to the great education administered at our school. We may get some students to be interviewed and talk about the positives of the school overall atmosphere.
We chose the topic of FLHS for a few reasons such as, the video can be used to show 8th graders a little about our school which can help out the teachers. Another reason, is because it is a good starting project for the class because of the topic’s simplicity. Since we attend FLHS we have experienced knowledge of what might persuade kids to attend. Lastly, this topic was ideal over the others because our designated filming area for this project is the same as where our topic’s scenes would take place.

Introduction blog

Hi, my name is Montana and I am a sophomore. I would consider myself an outgoing funny individual. I like to make people laugh and you can always find me laughing at something. I also make friends pretty easily because of my social personality. I live in Florida but I would like to live in Hawaii because of the chill vibes and natural beauty. I surf in Florida but the waves in Hawaii provide more excitement than down here in Florida.

I have many likes and hobbies such as volleyball, surfing, and hanging with friends. On the weekends you can find me with friends at the beach or the pool. I love being in the water whether it is the ocean or the pool. Living in Florida provides a non stop environment for swimming because it doesn’t really get cold here. If I am not with friends I like to have relaxing days by laying around and watching Netflix for most of the day. My weeks are very stressful because of the classes I take. For my sophomore year I am taking four AICE classes and the rest are honors classes. I am kind of a lazy person when it comes to school, so this year will be more stressful than ever. I also love to travel. My dad used to travel a lot for work purposes so when I was little my mom would take me with them. Ever since then I loved it. Every break that we have from school we will try to travel somewhere, whether we go somewhere in Florida or to another state or country. I am proud to say that I have been to about 20 U.S. states and five countries in my 16 years of life, and I can’t wait for more.

As well as positives I also have many pet peeves.  For example, it annoys me when people walk slowly in front of me or stop in the middle of the hallway.  In addition, when people let their roller backpacks go wherever and it either trips you or runs over your foot and they don't apologize.  An obvious dislike for everyone is when people are rude for no reason. Their comments can really hurt someone, especially if it is a sensitive topic. I also don’t like when people act dumb to look cute. It is annoying because it is not cute to be dumb and it is embarrassing for everyone around. I don’t have a lot of patience when it comes to these situations. Therefore, I consider these my dislikes.
